DPS calls off search for boat
The Department of Public Safety called off on Sunday the search for a distressed vessel west of Saipan as there was no sighting and nobody even filed a report with DPS about an overdue or missing boat from the island.
Acting DPS spokesman Lt. Jason Tarkong said yesterday that after the search-and-rescue operation on the My Lady vessel was called off Saturday afternoon, they did not resume the search.
Tarkong said DPS Saipan has not received any report of any overdue vessel or missing boat.
However, he said he can’t speak for U.S. Coast Guard Guam, and that he also did not receive any report from Rota and Tinian.
He said they could not find the distressed vessel at the location that was given by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Tarkong said he spoke with DPS Saipan Boating Safety Section officers, who told him that there are a couple of boats on the island that have My Lady as their first names, but no vessel with just the name My Lady.
“We are still investigating anybody who reported of a distressed or overdue vessel. As of this time, nothing,” he said.
Tarkong said that DPS received a call from USCG Guam on Saturday at about 10:40am, reporting a distress call from a vessel identified as My Lady over the VHF marine radio channel 16. DPS Boating Safety Section then launched its search and rescue boat to conduct a search 20 miles west of Saipan. The USCG also launched a rescue vessel and helicopter to assist the search.
