The Department of Public Safety assured the public yesterday that its detectives are still actively investigating into the killing of bartender Emerita “Emie” Romero in early February.

“DPS is following leads on person[s] of interest but is unable to provide further details at this time. The investigation is still actively ongoing,” police officer Jason Tarkong said in a statement yesterday.

Tarkong urged members of the community to call the DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau at 664-9042 or Crime Stoppers at 234-7272 if they have any information about the Romero murder.

Police Capt. Lawrence Camacho earlier reported to the Office of the Attorney General that DPS Commissioner Ramon C. Mafnas allegedly interfered with the investigation into the killing of Romero.

Sources disclosed that forensic results of the examination done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Virginia are already out. DPS and the FBI have yet to confirm the information as of yesterday.

Last March, Mafnas said the results of the FBI examinations “will more or less seal” the Romero case. He refused to elaborate. He earlier said that DPS and the FBI are investigating the activities and events associated with a “person of interest.”

Romero was last seen alive boarding a green or blue tinted sedan around 3am on Feb. 5 near her residence in Garapan. FBI agents found her body two days later during a search in the northernmost building of the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque.

Yesterday was her birthday, according to a KSPN report. She would have turned 38.

The cash reward for any information leading to an arrest in this case has already reached $22,000.
