DPL warns against quarry sale of coral to gov’t agencies
The Department of Public Lands has reminded commercial quarry operators against selling coral aggregates to government agencies.
In a letter to JG Sablan Rock Quarry, Inc. on Jan. 19, then DPL secretary Pete A. Tenorio reminded the company of this obligation, after referring to a news report that said that quarry operators were selling coral aggregates to the Saipan Mayor’s Office for road repair and secondary roads.
Tenorio cited their permit with the Rock Quarry, under a “public benefits” section, which stated that CNMI government would be “exempted from paying any charges for quarry materials extracted” by their company; and that the company would be exempted from paying royalty fees for quarry materials supplied to the government, among others.
“JG Sablan Rock Quarry, Inc., shall refrain assessing any charges of coral materials to CNMI government agencies that will be used for public services,” Tenorio, who is now policy advisor to Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, wrote.
The quarry permit also states that it is the company’s responsibility to keep detailed records of any and quarry materials to the government; and that this report would be submitted as a separate report from the royalty report to be submitted by the company.
