DOJ awards GovGuam $218,608
WASHINGTON, D.C.-Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo recently announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $218,608 in federal financial assistance the Guam Bureau of Statistics and Plans and the Guam Department of Youth Affairs.
A total of $166,108 was awarded to the Bureau of Statistics and Plans through the Coverdell Forensic Science Improvements Grants Program for fiscal year 2011. These funds were awarded by the National Institute of Justice, and will help the bureau improve its quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services, and eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence.
Also, $40,000 was awarded to DYA through the Formula Grants Program, which supports state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. This Title II Formula Grant will help DYA improve the following program areas in its juvenile justice system: aftercare and re-entry; compliance monitoring; disproportionate minority contact; planning and administration; and the state advisory group.
Another $12,500 was awarded to DYA through the Title V Community Prevention Grants Program, which aims to reduce risks and enhance protective factors to prevent at-risk youth from entering the juvenile justice systems and to intervene with first-time and non-serious offenders to keep them out of the juvenile justice system. This grant will help fund community programs that reduce delinquency, promote youth development, strengthen family units, and foster healthy and nurturing environments.(PR)
