Proceeds from the 5th Annual Docomo Pacific Golf Classic will provide more opportunities for the Marianas Tourism Education Council to educate the community, especially the youth about the importance of tourism.

Docomo Pacific general manager James Nelson, who organizes the annual golf tournament, handed over a check for $14,627.32 on Oct. 23 to be used for MTEC programs.

Nelson also recognized the numerous businesses who contributed to the golf classic, saying, “Every year, the Docomo Pacific Golf Classic garners sponsorship from NMI businesses, because we know it is vital that we invest in tourism, in order to achieve positive changes in our community.”

MTEC chair Vicky Benavente expressed appreciation to the volunteers and participants of the annual event.

“MTEC continues to repeat the slogan ‘Tourism is Everybody’s Business’ because without community involvement, the islands’ tourism industry will not thrive, or we wouldn’t be able to compete as a travel destination,” Benavente said.

MTEC treasurer Christopher Lubi added, “It really feels great that there are private businesses like Docomo Pacific whose support makes a great deal of difference in the service of our community. These contributions give MTEC bigger opportunities to expand its reach and make our youth more involved in promoting the Marianas.”

MTEC board member Larry Lee said the donation will assist with the MY WAVE Clubs, off-island field trips, island tours, essay contests, and the annual MTEC/MY WAVE Tourism Summit.

“Despite economic challenges, MTEC will continue to reach out to the community, bringing together all stakeholders, whether in the public or private sector,” Lee said. (MTEC)
