DEQ: Exercise caution in beaches

Share

The Division of Environmental Quality’s normal weekly analysis of Saipan’s recreational beaches and storm drainages has been postponed due to the damage caused by Typhoon Soudelor and the lack of a continuous 24-hour power supply. Sampling and analysis of Saipan’s West Beaches will resume next week as the Environmental Surveillance Laboratory becomes operational again.

Although there is no current laboratory analysis indicating excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci), there is a general likelihood of higher levels of bacteria following any rainy period due to runoff from the land. Therefore, in order to adequately address public health concerns, DEQ is issuing this preemptive advisory, urging the public to exercise caution when swimming or fishing at all beach locations until otherwise notified.
