Democrats working on selection of bets for Nov. 8 elections
The NMI Democratic Party is trying to catch up in its selection process of candidates to meet the Aug. 10, 2016 deadline for submission for nominating petitions and candidacy for the Nov. 8 general elections, according to party chair Daniel O. Quitugua.
“This year, we started a little bit late into the election season. We got ourselves organized last month,” said Quitugua in a phone interview yesterday.
Quitugua, however, said they are doing the necessary process in compliance both with their by-laws and election laws.
He disclosed that he was just talking to the chair of the committee tasked in the selection process of their candidates.
Quitugua said they have yet to determine their bets as they are in the selection process for all the positions.
He said the chair tasked for the selection has to meet with the executive central committee.
Quitugua disclosed they are trying to meet possibly today, Friday.
He said they are going to select the candidates for all offices, including the U.S. delegate, Senate, and House of Representatives.
“We are open for any individuals who are interested in any of those offices,” he said.
For himself, Quitugua said he has no plans to run for any elected position. He said he just want to help the party and work hard for those individuals who have interest in running under the Democratic Party.
Quitugua was the running mate of the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial candidate Edward M. Deleon Guerrero in the 2014 elections.
The Democratic Party’s by-laws called for their 20 elected individuals in the CNMI.
“Amongst the 20 members of the central executive committee, the government body of the party, they elect, they chose their officers,” Quitugua said.
Attorney Janet H. King is the party’s vice chair, Jonathan Cabrera is the secretary, while Emiliana Chargualaf serves as the treasurer.
