Democratic Party billboards vandalized

Political billboards installed by Democratic Party candidates were vandalized or stolen over the weekend, according to party chair Rosiky Camacho.

He said that Commonwealth flags were stolen from the billboard trailer of Edward Masga Deleon Guerrero and Daniel Ogo Quitugua, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, the trailer of Antonio Pinaula Mareham, candidate for Saipan mayor, and Jesus Ilo Taisague, candidate for the Senate.

The trailers were located along Tun Herman Pan Road leading to the airport.

The flagpole for Taisague’s trailer was also destroyed. Camacho noted that the pole was welded so it would have taken some strength to pull down.

He said he thinks the damage occurred on Friday night because a Democratic Party member discovered the damage early Saturday morning.

According to him, a CNMI flag was also stolen two weeks ago in Koberville from the trailer of the four Democratic Party candidates for Precinct 1.

Camacho said they did not report the flag stolen because it was only one flag and children playing around may have done it.

However, with the four flags stolen and one welded pole destroyed at the Tun Herman Pan Road, Camacho felt obliged to report the damage.

In addition, Camacho said that billboards in Chalan Piao opposing casino on Saipan were pulled down about a month ago.

He said he is not aware of the exact costs of damage but if the party had to keep replacing flags and repairing poles it may cost much.

Camacho asks whoever is or are responsible for these actions to refrain from doing more destruction.

“Just vote for whatever decision your heart tells you but please do not destroy those billboards; respect the hard work and time of the people that erected them,” he said. See related letter to the editor on Page 11
