U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona has delayed the trial of a man who was arrested as he tried to check-in for outbound flight to Los Angeles, California, via Narita, Japan, using alleged fake documents.

Manglona ordered that the trial of Dongjun Li which had been set for Oct. 3, 2011, be continued to Oct. 24, 2011, after Li requested for more time to file motion if necessary and warranted.

Manglona said the U.S. government did not object and represented that it believes the ends of justice would be served by allowing Li a short continuance.

The judge agreed with Li that continuance is necessary to allow the defendant to pursue further discovery, to afford the prosecution adequate time to respond to any new discovery request, and to permit the parties fully and properly to prepare for trial.

Li, a 38-year-old Chinese national, is indicted for immigration fraud and false statement or entry. Attorney Mark A. Scoggins is representing the defendant in the case.

According to the indictment, Li used a forged U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service Form I-512 on July 15, 2011, as evidence of authorized stay or employment in the U.S. The document was accompanied by an authorization for extension of parole of alien in the U.S. dated July 11, 2011.
