Deadline for farmer/rancher grants fast approaching
The Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Service (NMC-CREES) wants to remind farmers and ranchers of the CNMI that grants are available to them from the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education, a program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by Utah State University.
The grants from WSARE are meant to promote good stewardship of the nation’s natural resources, to enhance the quality of life of farmers and ranchers, to ensure the viability of rural communities, to protect the health and safety of those involved in food and farm systems, and to promote crop, livestock and enterprise diversification.
There are several grant types available. Farmers and ranchers can avail up to $15,000 and groups with a minimum of three farmers may get up to $25,000. Professional + Producer Grants are limited to $50,000. Additionally, WSARE provides grants for professional development of agriculturists up to $60,000.
The deadline for this year’s grant application cycle is Dec. 2, 2011. For more information, contact NMC-CREES WSARE coordinator Dr. Allan Sabaldica at 433-2576 or allans@nmcnet.edu. Grant applications are available on the WSARE website http://www.westernsare.org. (NMC)
