The finals in the U8 boys’ and girls’ long jump were the first events to be held before the brief opening ceremony that was attended by Northern Marianas Athletics officials, McDonald’s shift manager Joe Ayuyu Jr., coaches, and parents of all participating students.
Ayuyu, in a brief opening remarks, congratulated all participants who made it to the finals and encouraged those who failed to qualify to train harder.
“Thank you and congratulations to all of you who participated this year. For those of you who did not make it, you gave your best but you must train harder in preparation for next year,” said Ayuyu.
“To everyone, just have fun, good luck on the coming events, and stay hydrated. I would also like to thank PSS, all volunteers, and the family and friends of all the kids participating this year.”
NMA president Ramon A. Tebuteb, who is also a representative of Saipan’s Election District III, also wished all participants the best.
“It is time for you to run faster, jump higher, and throw harder as you can. This event promotes a friendly competition with the hopes of also fostering camaraderie to everyone. Good luck to all of you.”
Dangol was the meet’s first gold medalist posting 2.79 meters in the long jump. Her mark was just short of the 2.83m she registered during the qualifiers.
Savita Sikkel, Dangol’s Brilliant Star teammate, finished second with 2.78m that was better that her 2.70m qualifying mark, while Whispering Palms’ Soarin Oh settled for the bronze with a distance of 2.73m, which was a big improvement from the 1.90m she recorded in the preliminaries.
The 60m and 100m runs, softball throw, shot put, and discus throw were the other events scheduled yesterday and results were unavailable at press time.
