It was an all-Hopwood Middle School and Dandan Middle School show at the start of the Public School System Interscholastic Volleyball Tournament last Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.

Hopwood fielded four teams, while Dandan had five in the round-robin preliminaries and their participation in the weekend competition will get them the higher seeding in the Feb. 23 playoffs against squads from six other schools.

“Although we were only able to get four of the 10 boys teams and five of the 10 girls teams, we will still be allowing Tanapag Middle School, Cha Cha Middle School, Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School, as well as Rota and Tinian to join in the championship tournament scheduled for Feb. 23. Those teams that competed last Feb. 9 will receive the higher seeding in the tournament,” PSS Athletic Department director Nick Gross said.

Hopwood swept all three games in the boys division of the 4×4 grass volleyball contest, beating Dandan 1, 2, and 3. The three teams from Dandan have similar 1-2 slates with Dandan 2 winning the tiebreak and second place in the standings based on points system (+6). Dandan 3 (+5) and Dandan 1 (+2) came in at third and fourth, respectively.

In the girls division, Hopwood 1 had a perfect 4-0 mark after downing Hopwood 2 and 3 and Dandan 1 and 2. Hopwood 3 was ranked second with its 3-1 mark and was followed by Hopwood 2 (2-2), Dandan 2 (1-3), and Dandan 1 (0-4).

Meanwhile, the PSS Interscholastic 3×3 Basketball Tournament will be held this Saturday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. The competition is for high school division and will also follow a pool play format in the preliminary round with the single-elimination playoffs scheduled for March 2.

The middle school grass volleyball and 3×3 basketball are part of PSS’ spring sports program, which will run until may. PSS will also have athletics, 4×4 basketball (elementary), and canoe races, and a separate disability sports festival for Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.
