The D-9ers finally raked in their third win in the 2023 Tan Holdings-Saipan Baseball League season against the Survivors last Thursday, 7-6, after two go-ahead singles by John Atalig and Dave Malwelbug in the fifth inning to retake the lead and hold onto the win.
The game started off with a bang as the D-9ers’ first three batters—Isaiah Lizama, Ben Lizama, and Tindin Deleon Guerrero—reached base and all scored. Giovanni Ayuyu hit an RBI single, while Derrick Sablan brought in the fourth run after a base hit.
Their offense didn’t get the third out until the last batter of the lineup grounded out to the Survivors’ shortstop for a 4-0 lead.
The Survivors tried to cut the lead in their at-bat and scored their first two lead-off batters after they both walked, stole two bases, and reached home on D-9ers fielding errors.
The D-9ers couldn’t score in the second inning and only had a one run 4-3 lead after the Survivors scored one in their at-bat.
John Atalig then hit a double to get the D-9ers in scoring position and was then brought home after Robert Tudela hit an RBI single for a 5-3 lead.
The Survivors still had a chance to cut the lead and they actually overtook the D-9ers after they tacked on three runs in the fourth for a 6-5 game.
However, the D-9ers still had some tricks up their sleeves as they scored two after singles by Atalig and Malwelbug in the fifth against Survivors pitcher Jason Reyes for a still close 7-6 lead.
The Survivors tried to rally in the last couple of innings, but were shut down in order by D-9ers pitcher Chris Gonzales to hold onto the one-run lead for the win. The D-9ers pitcher to start off the game was Jeremy Atalig.
The D-9ers are tied with the Survivors at 3-7 record.
