CWs’ plea

Dear Gov. Ralph DLG Torres: On behalf of all CW-1 workers whose status are still valid since the pandemic started, we would like to request your good office to consider the plight of all contract workers.

Like U.S. citizens, green card holders and EAD holders, we are also greatly affected by the impact of this unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic and are suffering financially like everyone else. Most of us work in private companies like hotels, restaurants, construction firms, and others that have been directly hit due to the closing of the airport, with zero tourist arrivals and flights temporarily suspended.

Majority of us either work with a very few hours or not at all. Others were furloughed or even had to exit due to CW-1 renewal issues and they will be going home with nothing at all.

We have continuously followed CNMI laws and policies and paid local and federal taxes despite the hardship we are all experiencing through this pandemic.

With rental fees, loans, and daily food expenses, we all have the same needs like the rest of the residents here.

With all of these, we are sincerely asking your good office to kindly consider CW-1 visa holders to be included in the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. Thank you and may God bless us all.
