CUC: Outage nothing to be alarmed about

The power blackout that occurred Sunday evening affecting several areas of the island was nothing to be alarmed about, according to Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Gary Camacho.

At about 6:37pm last Sunday, San Jose, Oleai, Susupe, and parts of Chalan Kano experienced a power outage that lasted about an hour and a half.

In a statement, Camacho said the power interruption was due to multiple equipment failure.

“There was a power interruption in the Kiya 4 circuit, which is in the substation near Chalan Kiya, affecting portions of Chalan Kanoa on Beach Road,” said Camacho.

A failed airbrake switch in front of the Ada Gymnasium and a capacitor failure in front of the Townhouse Shopping Center in Susupe tripped the outage.

“It turns out switches failed due to age. [CUC] have bypassed it currently and are replacing them with new units,” said Camacho.

He said there is nothing to be alarmed about and that this would soon be resolved.

“There would not be any problems moving forward,” said Camacho.

According to Camacho, the power got back to the areas at around 8pm last Sunday. About an hour and a half was used to “verify and assess [the situation] before [CUC] could start to work on the isolation of the faulty components.”
