The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board of directors approved Friday a $1.50 per hour of night differential premium pay for those doing off-island utility assistance work and for on-island employees.

At CUC board’s regular board meeting, all members agreed to grant night differential premium pay for off-island employees or those who have been sent to Guam, from 6pm to 6am effective last June 4.

The board also approved night differential premium pay for on-island employees from 8pm to 6am effective Oct. 1, 2023.

Before the voting, acting CUC executive director Betty G. Terlaje recommended mirroring the Guam Power Authority’s hours for the CUC crew while they are in Guam and that is from 6pm to 6am. The CUC crew sent to Guam is helping GPA restore power to the island after it was hot by Typhoon Mawar in May.

Terlaje said they’re proposing a $1.50 an hour for night differential work, which means work performed between the hours of 6pm and 6am for the off-island assistance.

For those on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, though, she said they feel that 8pm to 6am will be night differential hours and it would be at the same rate of $1.50 an hour.

Terlaje said the estimated cost for the night differential is an additional $6,400 bi-weekly or an annual $167,000.

She said this will affect the 24-hour shifts mostly power plant employees and the call center troubleshooter that go out in the middle of the night.
