‘CUC board must settle differences’

Senate Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications committee chair Sixto K. Igisomar (R-Saipan) is advising Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board members to finally settle their differences and work together to find solutions on the problems that continue to hound the CNMI’s lone power and water provider.

Igisomar said the people are fully aware of CUC’s problems with the board’s disagreements within their ranks being made public.

“The people are fully aware of CUC’s situation and financial status. It’s a no brainer since it is not brand new problems. We know that our infrastructure is old but CUC has been trying their best to refurbish the engines and they are doing their best on what they have,” said Igisomar.

“There’s a lot more that’s going on that we hear or read. I know the frustration of the board members. Before anything can be done, they have to settle differences.”

He added that internal issues are the biggest challenge that CUC is facing right now that’s why he wants the board to stop with their bickering.

“I know the issues are complicated but bickering won’t provide answers. It can be easy to abolish the board, but then what? They need to agree on the message that they want to give to the public. What’s happening now is confusing to the public,” Igisomar said.

The first-time senator added that the CUC should look forward and prepare for the future especially when business establishments that are being constructed start their operations.

“How are we managing the current situation when it comes to power, water, and sewer services? These are issues that also need attention,” added Igisomar.

He said that he and Senate Vice President Arnold I. Palacios (R-Saipan) would invite the CUC board along with the Division of Environmental Qualify, and the Division of Coastal Resources Management to a joint committee hearing next month to ask them a series of questions on issues that would affect the CNMI in the future.
