CUC board chair seat vacant
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. had its first board meeting for 2018 last Tuesday without a chairman.
The term of Commonwealth Development Authority chair Ignacio Perez expired last Dec. 20, making him lose his seat at the CUC board and his position as chairman. Under the law, the CDA chairman holds a seat in the CUC board simultaneously.
Pursuant to 4 CMC Section 8131(a)(1), the chairman of the CDA board of directors shall serve as a member of the CUC.
Perez was elected CUC board chairman at the first official meeting of the newly reconstituted board on Dec. 5, 2017.
The other CUC board members are Weston Deleon Guerrero, vice chairman; Matthew Holley, secretary; Jovita Paulino, treasurer; and Miranda V. Manglona.
CUC executive director Gary Camacho said that vice chair Deleon Guerrero, in the meantime, is acting CUC board chairman.
“Right now we have acting chair, our vice chair Weston Deleon Guerrero who will lead and facilitate meetings until CDA have another chairman that will have a seat in the CUC board…I don’t know how that’s going to transpire because CDA is a completely different body than the CUC board,” he said. “From my understanding, his (Perez’s) term in the CDA expired, which makes him a non-member of the CDA board and, obviously, eliminates him from membership at the CUC board.”
For its part, CDA vice chair Diego M. Songao is now the CDA acting chairman. Until the CDA board fills the vacant seat of CDA chairman, Songao will represent CDA on the CUC board.
Songao is not a neophyte when it comes to being a CUC board member. He served as CUC board vice chairman from 2014 up to the first quarter of 2015.
Camacho is looking forward to the new CUC board member representing CDA.
“I’m hopeful and confident that they will identify another chairman at the CDA and then that chairman will be a CUC board of director,” he said. “I personally look forward to working very closely with that board member, together with the other board members, to assist and continue to work for a better CUC.”
The next CUC board meeting will be on Jan. 12, 2018.
