Cruz earns spot for FilTaga Ace of the Year
Cruz clinched the September Ace after firing the second lowest net score of 71 for a one-shot win over the 72s of Freddie Cataluna and Paul Bea.
He fired rounds of 46 and 47 for the 93 total but with a 22 handicap, he wound up with the 71.
Rene Batallones posted the lowest score to top the monthly tournament but he already won the July edition to allow Cruz to earn the September Ace.
Batallones shot a 37 and 39 in the front and back nines for 78 and with an 8 handicap he earned a net score of 70.
Cataluna fired 38 and 42 (80, 8 handicap) and Bea made 53 and 51 (104, 32 handicap) to settle for that 72, ending up at third and fourth, respectively.
Jess Yumul came in solo fifth (73), while Dan Ganacias and Adoni Matutino had 74s for sixth to seventh place, and Larry Pascual and Ruben Avendano made 76 each for eighth to ninth spots.
Gil Faller rounded up the Top 10 with a 77, which is the same score of 11th place finisher Eli Buenaventura.
Jhun Calma (78), William Retardo (80), Nestor Siruelo (83), Raffy Piamonte (84), and Richard Saludez (85) were the other FilTaga members that competed, while Jimmy Cruz and Akira Saito played as guests.
The October Ace, which will be simultaneously held with the Emon Lodge 179 tournament, is set at the Marianas Country Club on Oct. 25 with a tee time of 8am.
The entry fee is pegged at $85 where FilTaga members will only pay $55 that includes the green fee and lunch. There will be no pot money that will be collected.
The November Ace of the Month and Turkey Shootout will be held on Nov. 23 with a 12noon showtime and 12:30pm tee off. (Jon Perez)
