CPA to upgrade Tinian airport sewer line

The Commonwealth Ports Authority will improve the sewer system for the Tinian airport to go with ongoing terminal improvements.

The CPA board voted to award the construction management services for the Tinian airport sewer line and sewer system to the company, GHD, last week.

The project is funded separately from the Office of Insular Affairs-backed Tinian terminal improvements that broke ground last Friday, but will go together to open a terminal for direct flights.

During a CPA board meeting last week, CPA executive assistant Wendi Prater told board members that the board in September approved using settlement funds from a previous case for the sewer line projects.

CPA negotiated with the highest ranked consultant and was waiting to award the contract to the consultant before putting to bid the sewer project.

Prater said the sewer project was originally part of the terminal improvement project. “But the departure terminal will not have a septic system unless we do this project. So in order to open the terminal we have to do the sewer line,” she told board members.

Last Friday, CPA and stakeholders broke ground on the Tinian terminal repairs with the aim to have direct flights to the island of Tinian.

CPA, through contractors ASC Corp., has set a completion time of 270 days. SSFM CNMI, LLC is the construction manager. A completion date is eyed for March 18, 2016.
