CPA to resume airport’s 24-hour operations today
The lights are back on at the Francisco C. Ada International Airport.
The Commonwealth Ports Authority will resume today, Aug. 17, full operations at the Saipan international airport.
The airport’s navigational aids were damaged by the destructive winds of Typhoon Soudelor when it swept through the island over two weeks.
Federal Aviation Administration technicians from Guam flew in to help CPA with repairs following the typhoon.
“The resumption of 24-hour operations will be tomorrow at six o’clock in the morning,” CPA executive director Maryann Lizama said yesterday.
CPA completed repairs to the navigation aids with help of the FAA and Guam International Airport Authority, according to Lizama.
Since Typhoon Soudelor damaged the navigation aids two weeks ago, international flights and flights from Guam have been flying in only between sunrise and sundown.
CPA reported about 1,500 stranded airline passengers waiting to leave or arrive on island after the Typhoon Soudelor.
Marianas Visitors Authority earlier reported that the shutdown of night flights was one of the reasons for the some 7,000 cancellations of tourist trips to the island in the wake of Typhoon Soudelor.
