CPA sees decline in inbound cargo

The Commonwealth Ports Authority’s records for inbound cargo shows a decrease in the months of September, November, and December last year.

Pete P. Reyes, who chairs the Commonwealth Ports Authority board’s Seaport Facilities Committee, said the decline in the inbound cargo tonnage at the ports of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota are the latest available numbers the committee has.

At the port of Saipan, tonnage by inbound cargo dropped 8% in November 2019 compared to the same month in fiscal year 2018.

Tonnage by outbound cargo, however, increased 243% last November compared to the same month in 2018.

At the port of Tinian, tonnage by inbound cargo decreased 27% last December compared to the same month in 2018. Tonnage by outbound cargo also decreased by 9% last December compared to the same month in 2018.

At the port of Rota, the tonnage by inbound cargo decreased at a very high 72% last September compared to the same month in 2018. Tonnage by outbound cargo also dropped 51% last September compared to the same month in 2018.

Reyes believes, though, that the coronavirus outbreak is affecting the CNMI airports more than it does the seaports.
