Police officers and a civilian safely rescued five Korean swimmers who were stranded outside the reef of the Sugar Dock channel last Friday morning.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Jason Tarkong said yesterday that medics responded to the scene and examined the victims.

Tarkong said the victims—three men and two women with ages 27 to 35—were not injured.

Tarkong said that police were dispatched to Sugar Dock last Friday at 10:37am, in response to a report of a group of swimmers who’ve been stranded.

A police officer arrived at the Big Boyz beach concession stand and borrowed a jet ski, while DPS Boating Safety officers prepared to launch the Zodiac II rescue boat.

At 10:41am, police officer Emery Kaipat located the swimmers outside the reef and saw three men and two women who appeared exhausted and were holding on to rubber tubes.

Kaipat rescued two swimmers on the jetski, while a certain Obaydul, a Bangladeshi employee of Island Marine Sports, also picked up another swimmer on his jet ski.

Boating Safety officer Stanley Patris and police officer Adrian Mendiola borrowed two jet skis and rescued the remaining two swimmers.

All five swimmers were brought to shore, where medics from the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services waited and subsequently examined them.
