COP suggested as a possible caretaker of unwanted gym
As reported earlier, PSS is reviewing whether they would need such a gym as the recent middle school reconfiguration and the unprecedented population number at Marianas High School may make the need for a new high school a higher priority.
The Koblerville gym was initially intended to be built for the proposed Koblerville Junior High School, but the administrative costs PSS would shoulder with the new gym and the lack of commitment from the government in building a new junior high puts its use into question.
“I think it would be good to meet with Coral Ocean Point because the gym is right across. If [COP] can adopt the gym, provide for maintenance [and] repairs as part of community service, they get a tax break for that. I think it’s worth looking into,” Ada said.
Board member Lucy Blanco-Maratita called the idea a “good suggestion.”
“Perhaps there might be another government agency that oversees sports centers [who] they can take over and assume the responsibility,” board chair Herman Guerrero said.
Conversations on the topic continue and “nothing is definitive” so far, Guerrero said.
The gym’s completion date is Dec. 19, barring any weather problems, according to the Capital Improvement Projects office of PSS.
Constructed by Tropex Garden, the gym costs $1,405,817, with some funds redirected from a proposed but cancelled Saipan Southern High School swimming pool.
