Cop chases ex-convict who allegedly burglarized restaurant
A police officer chased and arrested an ex-convict who ran away after allegedly burglarizing a closed restaurant in Garapan and trying to hit the owner with a rock on Sunday night.
Police officer John Cabrera found the suspect, Johnny B. John, hiding under a tree covered with heavy vines and bushes near YP Apartment in Garapan.
John, 28, was taken to Superior Court yesterday on charges of burglary, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, criminal mischief, and disturbing the peace.
Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio imposed a $20,000 cash bail and set the preliminary hearing for Jan. 13 at 9am.
Attorney Richard Pierce was appointed as counsel for John. Assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas appeared for the government.
According to police detective Jason A. Bahillo, the owner of New Double Luck Restaurant located along Alaihai Avenue, was having dinner with his staff after they closed the establishment on Sunday night.
The owner wondered why the kitchen lights were off when he turned them on after cooking their dinner.
The owner turned on the lights and discovered that the rear screen-door sliding lock was not in place and the door of the storage room was open.
The owner checked the storage room, where he found a man, who was later identified as John, hiding underneath a box.
The owner and his staff stopped John, but the suspect managed to run outside and took a rock from the ground. John tried to hit the restaurant’s owner with the rock.
It was at 10:42pm when a security guard at the Best Sunshine live casino reported the incident to police.
After a few minutes, three police officers, including Cabrera, came and chased John, who ran into a jungle area near YP Apartment along Puti Tainobui Avenue.
At 11:14pm, Cabrera apprehended John.
According to court documents, John has previous criminal convictions, mostly burglary and theft when he was still a juvenile. He also has a pending theft case.
