Cop charged with stealing candy makes plea deal
A police officer, who has been charged with stealing snacks at a gas station in Susupe has signed a plea agreement with the CNMI government.
The change of plea hearing will be on Monday, Sept. 9, at 10am before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho.
If the judge does not accept the plea deal, the bench trial in the case will proceed that same day, Monday. In an order yesterday, Camacho ordered the parties to come prepared for trial.
Under the plea deal, Koji Maurice N. Taisacan will plead guilty to theft. In exchange, the Office of the Attorney General will recommend a sentence of imprisonment of one year, all suspended.
The OAG will also recommend placing the defendant under one year of supervised probation and made to pay a $200 fine, $25 court costs, and $120 probation fee.
Taisacan will also be required to pay Shell Gas Station $2.45 in restitution for the Starbucks drink that was never recovered. He will also complete 50 hours of community service.
According to court records, Taisacan took two candy bars and a Starbucks drink, valued at less than $250, from the gas station on June 12, 2019.
