If Major League Baseball sportscaster Chris “Boomer” Berman were to call the home run derby held last Sunday, he would’ve chanted “back, back, back, back!” four times—as Cartfield Sablan hit three home runs, while Allana Sumang hit one to claim the men’s and women’s division crowns in the home run derby of the 2022 Budweiser Belau Amateur Softball Association League held at the Dandan Softball Field.

Sablan of Team Peleliu initially smacked four big ones out of the park but was tied with Tokahao’s Jeff Cruz, which led to a second round to break the tie.

At the end of the shootout, Sablan was the last man standing when the smoke cleared, as he hit three home runs to Cruz’s two.

Third place went to Sufa’s Audie Maratita who hit three home runs in the first round.
In the women’s division derby, Sumang of the Lady Eagles, Kiana Aldan of Queens of Diamonds, and Glare Mabel of Lady Eagles all had three home runs in the first round which opened the second tie breaking round.

There, Sumang hit the first-place clinching home run, while Aldan and Mabel came out empty, which opened up the third round for second and third place. Aldan snatched the second place prize as she hit three home runs while Mabel hit two.

A total of 16 batters from the men’s division joined the derby, with Jerome Delos Santos, Marino Hiroichi, and J.J. Laniyo hitting two home runs each, while Darwin Masaharu, Taylor Germance, Dominic Hideo, and Tony Pangelinan hit one each. Chris Sablan, Henry Reyes, Clint Quitugua, John Diaz, Manny Villagomez, and Mike Techur came up with goose-eggs.

The women’s champion brought home a Bud Light bat, second place won two cases of beer, and third place won one case of beer, while the men’s champion won a Budweiser bat, second place won two cases of beer, and third place won one case of beer.

Results of the champions in the individual results will be posted in the next editions of Saipan Tribune.
