Constitutional amendment up for talks today

A proposed amendment to the CNMI Constitution is up for discussion on Tinian today.

Rep. Alice Igitol’s (R-Saipan) House Legislative Initiative 20-01 seeks to use $1 million from accrued interest obtained through the Marianas Public Land Trust to pay for health insurance of eligible individuals of Northern Marianas descent, while the remaining accrued interest is deposited into a special account for distribution to eligible NMDs annually.

According to Igitol, a joint public hearing between the House Judiciary and Governmental Operations Committee led by chair Rep. Ivan Blanco (R-Saipan) and the House Natural Resources Committee led by Igitol would be held today at the Tinian courthouse at 5pm.

The public hearing would also be held on House Speaker Rafael Demapan’s (R-Saipan) House Bill 20-157, which intends to establish a new pension fund for the CNMI, and Sen. Francisco Borja’s (R-Tinian) Senate Bill 20-79, which intends to address mayoral vacancies for terms in which lass than half has been completed.

Igitol’s H.L.I. 20-01 has garnered the support of four other members of the House; a public hearing on Rota for the same constitutional amendment has already been done on Rota. Saipan would soon follow after Tinian.
