Company eyeing private land near Kalabera Cave for paragliding biz

A company is planning to open a paragliding business on private land south of the Kalabera Cave and east of the Department of Public Safety’s shooting range in San Juan, Marpi.

Fortune Pacific Corp.’s proposed project site will be a 15,000-square-meter land on Chalan Kalabera Street owned by Juan C. Reyes.

Fortune Pacific’s proposed project has no fixed structures but needs only clearing of vegetation at the site, which is zoned as rural.

The Commonwealth Zoning Board will hear Fortune Pacific’s application for conditional use permit at a public hearing at 5pm today, Thursday.

In its application, Fortune Pacific estimates the project to cost $50,000.

Fortune Pacific Corp. has also applied for permits from the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality and the Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Fortune Pacific Corp. president Wang Lihang submitted the “conditional use” application before the Zoning Office. Richard Peng is listed as the contact person.

In response to Saipan Tribune’s inquiry yesterday, Peng said the company decided to select the area in San Juan because it is a safe place for paragliding.

Peng said the place is also far from the airport, where such activities are not allowed.

Peng said they are not only targeting Chinese tourists, but also Japanese, Koreans, Russians, and any tourists who are interested in paragliding.
