Friday deadline for Humanities Awards nominations
The Northern Marianas Humanities Council wishes to remind the public that the deadline for submitting nominations for the 2014 Governor’s Humanities Awards is this Friday, Oct. 10, at 4:30pm.

Individuals and organizations may be nominated in one of five categories: Research and Publication in the Humanities; Preservation of CNMI History; Preservation of Traditional Cultural Practices; Outstanding Humanities Teacher (both in and outside of the classroom); and Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities.

Nomination forms and instructions are available on the council’s website, www.northernmarianashumanities.org, or at the council’s office in Gualo Rai.

Awards will be presented during an evening ceremony on Oct. 23.

Anti-measles vaccination for MHS students
The Division of Public Health, in partnership with the Public School System, is requiring all Marianas High School students to be vaccinated for measles, even if they were previously vaccinated. Division staff will be on campus all day on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the MHS Gymnasium.

Letter and permission slip from DPH were given to all MHS students last Friday. Make sure that you fill them out and submit them to your child›s Language Arts teacher. If you decide not to allow your child to get this vaccination, you must submit a letter to Ms. Cabrera, MHS principal, stating your reasons and attach any supporting documents. Otherwise, the permission slips are due on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014.  Please contact the school at 237-3206 for any questions. (MHS)

JKPL to host ukulele class for beginners
Ukulele class for beginners is open for registration at the Joeten Kiyu Public Library. The class will be taught every Thursday for eight sessions from Oct. 16 to Dec. 4. It will be from 4pm to 5pm. The minimum age requirement is 8 years old. Adults are welcome. A $50 prepayment is required.

Students must provide their own ukuleles and a folder to hold music sheets and parents or guardians must sign a liability waiver form on behalf of their participating children who are minors and also must adhere to the public library policies and procedures.

Deadline to register is on Oct. 11 and it is on a first-come, first-paid basis. The minimum enrollment is 15 students and maximum is 40. For more information contact JKPL at 235-7316, 235-7322 and ask for Erlinda Naputi. (PR)

UOG reopens at 1pm, classes and activities cancelled
The University of Guam opened at 1pm yesterday (Monday, Oct. 6), and all employees were asked to report for duty. All classes and activities remained cancelled/postponed for the day. Update from CHCC EOC
Gov. Eloy S. Inos has issued an “All Clear” for the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. As such, CHCC chief executive officer Esther L. Muna directed all clinics to resume services at 1pm yesterday, Oct. 6, 2014. For more information, call the CHCC operator at 234-8950. (CHCC)

Free screening of new documentary
Voices of the Marianas will be screening a new documentary about the making of an improvisational play. Titled What We Really Think, the documentary is directed by Barbara Sher and features Marianas High School students as the cast and Galvin Deleon Guerrero as the videographer. The documentary will be shown at the American Memorial Park on Oct. 17, at 7pm. It’s free and open to the public. (PR)

Saipan Little League membership meeting pushed back
The Saipan Little League Baseball, Inc.’s general membership meeting has been pushed back for Oct. 8, 2014, 5:30pm at the Ada Gym Pavilion. Managers, coaches, parents and all interested individuals are invited to attend. (PR)

FOA membership meeting on Oct. 14
The Friends of the Arts will hold its first membership meeting of the year on Oct. 14, 6:30pm to 9pm, at the Canton Chinese Restaurant, across from the Mobil/McDonald’s in Garapan.  Members and supporters of FOA are invited to attend. (FOA)
