Free writing workshop today

The fourth Marianas Writers’ Movement workshop on planning your novel is scheduled for today, Oct. 25, 2019, from 3pm to 5pm at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. This is a free writing workshop, open to the public ages 13 and older. The October prep writing workshops are for aspiring writers, with encouragement and support continuing through November during National Novel Writing Month, when you will write your novel (or memoir, or collection of stories or other book).
This project is part of the “Rekindling Marianas Narratives: Write Your Novel!” mini-grant program and is made possible by support from the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, a non-profit, private corporation funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. (PR)

Resiliency Fest tomorrow

The Resiliency Fest is happening tomorrow, Oct. 26, at the Marianas Business Plaza. Admission is free.
Organized by the Lady Diann Torres Foundation, the festival, which will be from 5pm to 10pm, will feature The John Dank Show and local artists like Studio 29:11, Saipan Music & Dance Studio, Goddhy, Dagu Diggers, and Big Jay Selepeo.
There will also be a distribution of relief goods. Crisis counselors will also be there. The foundation is also selling “resiliency shirts” for adults and children, as a fundraiser.

Free medical mission in Koblerville this Sunday

The Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) will be hosting a free medical mission this Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2pm to 6pm, at the Hannam Supermarket parking lot in Koblerville. There will be free services such as blood sugar and blood pressure checks, facial cleansing, and massages.
PMCC will also be giving away 30 reading glasses as well as 75 bags of toiletries on a first come, first served basis. There will also be snacks and refreshments.
“This is part of the celebration of our 20th anniversary,” said church pastor Claire Javillonar. PMMC has been conducting free medical missions annually since 2012.
After Sunday, the next medical mission will be on Nov. 24 at the Minachom Atdao at Kilili Beach in Susupe, for Susupe and San Jose villagers.

DPS to host Halloween ‘haunted passage’

The Department of Public Safety, in collaboration with the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the Department of Corrections, and the DPS Employee Association Inc., will be hosting a haunted passage way on Oct. 29.
The event, named “Terror on Tekken Street,” will be at the DPS Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ parking lot, right behind the Guma’ Hustisia courthouse in Susupe. Public parking is designated in front of the courthouse.
Entry is free and is open to the public. It will be from 6:30pm to 9pm. DPS advises the public to be cautious when out with children; to look both ways before crossing; to keep count of individuals when in groups, with one chaperone in front and behind the group; and to be aware of their surroundings when venturing into the passage. SHRM meeting on Oct. 30

The Society for Human Resource Management NMI Chapter will have its membership meeting on Oct. 30, 2019, at the Pacific Islands Club Saipan’s Charley’s Cabaret beginning at 11am. It will feature Public School System Cooperative Education program coordinator Brandon Nicholas and Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence executive director Maisie Tenorio. This meeting is open to the public.

Golf tournament fundraiser for JKPL

The 4th Annual Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Golf Tournament Fundraiser will take place on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Laolao Bay Golf & Resort’s west course. Game format is Low Gross and Double Peoria, 2-Person Scramble (Men and Women). Cost to participate is $200 entry per team. All proceeds will help support the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and its resource and collection development, circulation materials, and library programs. Business Expo 2019 on Nov. 9

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce will hold its newly re-instated Chamber Business Expo on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9am to 4pm at the Saipan World Resort. The goal is for Chamber members to showcase their company and new products and services to the local market. Registration is currently open and deadline for applications is Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, by 5pm.

Saipan to host terrestrial conservation conference

The 3rd Annual Marianas Terrestrial Conservation Conference & Workshop will be held on Nov. 18-20, at the Hibiscus Hall of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan in Garapan. Registration is free and open to the public, and will include presentations on terrestrial conservation, field trips and activities such as pre-conference proa rides and Mariana swiftlet field trip, and a lizard identification trip at American Memorial Park. JKPL to host Trunk-Or-Treat anew

The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library will be hosting the 8th Annual Community Halloween Trunk-Or-Treat on Oct. 31, 2019, from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the library’s parking lot in Susupe.
Held every year in collaboration with the organization Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, the library will be sponsoring a Halloween contest for “Best Trunk” and “Best Recyclable Book Costume.”
