Sea conditions rough on small craft
A small craft advisory is in effect until 5pm Thursday. This means conditions will be hazardous to small craft.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, east winds of 15 to 25 knots, with gusts of up to 30 knots and seas of 8 to 10 feet will be occurring on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota coastal waters until 5pm CHST Thursday.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions. (PR)
Public warned of rip currents
The public is being warned that there is a high risk of rip currents through Wednesday afternoon along east facing reefs on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, dangerous rip currents are present along east facing reefs of the Marianas until Wednesday afternoon. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The public is advised to stay out of the water along east facing reefs. Elsewhere, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. (PR)
4.4-magnitude quake in Pagan region
At 1:05pm on March 24, 2022, a report of a 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred 18.879°N 145.531°E of the Pagan region in the Northern Mariana Islands.
