The Central Statistics Division of the Department of Commerce currently has no director.

According to Commerce Secretary Mark Rabauliman, CSD director Alfonsis Sound recently left the department.

“It was a personal choice,” Rabauliman said. “His wife got a job off-island and he followed suit.”

Rabauliman said Sound left the CNMI around mid-August.

Sound has been working with the department as one of its division directors for two years prior to his resignation.

With CSD having no director, Rabauliman now directly oversees the CSD but he said they will look for an acting director soon.

“I’ll be making an announcement soon to the administration to provide this office, at least for the interim, an acting director,” he said.

He added that they will be getting someone from their own office as of now due to the challenges brought by Typhoon Soudelor to their workflow. For one, the Department of Commerce building on Capital Hill is still using generator power.

“Just in-house for now because with all this recovery mode, it’s kind of hard to work through the normal challenges,” Rabauliman said.

Rabauliman said they will revisit the position again when things are back to normal.
