Aside from competing in Saturday’s 2012 Guam Swimming Championships, four of Saipan Swim Club’s standouts will also take part in the 22nd Annual Cocos Crossing set for this Sunday.
The four that will take on the 2.5-mile challenge from Cocos Island to Merizo Pier in the southern part of the U.S. territory are Victoria Chentsova, Kento Akimaru, Lennosuke Suzuki, and Taiga Sato.
The four will be joined by SSC assistant coach and XTERRA pro Mieko Carey.
Sunday’s event will be 14-year-old Chentsova and 11-year-old Akimaru’s second crossing.
Last year, Akimaru finished 22nd out of the 166 participants with a time of 47.55 giving him first place for his age group.
Chentsova, meanwhile, finished 33rd with a time of 51.08 placing her second for her age group.
Also swimming last year were Grace and Andrew Kimball who placed 39th and 55th, respectively, with times of 53:23 and 58:09. The Kimballs have since relocated to Indonesia.
This year, 9-year-olds Suzuki and Sato will swim their first Cocos Crossing. They will not be alone making their debuts though, as Carey will also swim the event for the first time.
All of these swimmers recently prepped for this grueling event by swimming the Escape from Managaha.
Also going to Guam but competing only 2012 Guam Swimming Championships are Rinto Takahashi and Naoki Kasai.
SSC would like to thank the Tan Siu Lin Foundation for their assistance in arranging for the swimmers to stay at the Fiesta Resort Guam.
The club would also like to thank the Northern Mariana Islands Swimming Federation for their support as well as the Guam Swimming Federation and the Manukai Athletic Club for hosting these events.
