CNMI players join Guam Jr. ITF tourney
Nine CNMI players are in Guam to compete in the Calvo’s Selectcare ITF Junior Championships 2015 at the Rick Ninete Tennis Centre in Hagatna.
Colin Ramsey led the group that left Saipan last Thursday to participate in the Grade 5 event. Ramsey is in the 32-player main draw of the boys singles, while Tommy Choi, Luther Lizama, Michael Ren, and Steven Lee were scheduled to play in the qualifying draw over the weekend.
Ramsey is unranked in the boys singles and will duel Yohan Sung of South Korea in the first round. Hong Kong’s Ching Lam is the top-ranked player in the tournament at No. 543 and is also seeded first in the main draw. Chinese-Taipei’s Shao-Min Ko, who is ranked No. 638, is seeded second and is at the bottom half of the bracket.
Thailand, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore also have players in the main draw on the boys singles.
In the girls division, Mikayla Lopez and Negahr Rastguiy made it to the singles main draw, while Tania Tan and Carol Lee (as of May 7’s posting at Junior ITF website) are entered in the qualifying tournament. The Guam-hosted Junior ITF event will from May 11 to 16 and majority of the off-island players joining the six-day tournament will head to Saipan next week for the 2015 IT&E Northern Marianas Junior Championships.
Lopez will be paired against Singapore’s Ashley Kei Yim in the first round, while Rastguiy will face Japan’s Runa Ichinose. Both Lopez and Rastguiy are unranked in the main draw, which has Japan’s Satoko Sueno and Ayumi Hirata as Top 2 seeds.
