CNMI might see restoration of the Christmas light sculptures
Lighted sculptures of drawings made by children made into larger-than-life Christmas light décor erected after Thanksgiving might be lighted up once again along Beach Road.
The Marianas Visitors Authority board discussed at a recent meeting several projects for destination enhancement and one that came up was the Christmas light sculptures that were initially lit on Saipan’s main thoroughfare in 2001. The practice was stopped after 2008 due to funding issues.
MVA board chair Marian Aldan-Pierce brought up the Christmas lights and asked what the current state of the lighted sculptures are.
According to MVA board member Jerry Tan, the light sculptures were made possible by the business community and private individuals who contributed for the fabrication of the sculptures.
The lighted sculpture was once under the Illumination Project, an outgrowth of the “Millennium Project” that was a part of MVA’s 1999 “Visit the Marianas Campaign.”
The whole purpose of the Millennium Project was to encourage repeat visitors through islandwide beautification and to instill in the community the importance of the tourism industry.
MVA board members said they would discuss the matter at their next meeting.
Meanwhile, Pierce also pushed MVA to light up the airport with Christmas decorations and the Garapan tourist district as part of destination enhancement efforts of the tourism agency.
“This will give off a good holiday spirit. It is also attracting to the visitors coming in and leaving.”
