CNMI Labor looking into TDHC employees not getting paid
The CNMI Department of Labor said it is looking into the issue of employees not getting paid by Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino.
Over 600 Tinian Dynasty employees who are mostly alien workers were reported to have not received their salaries for more than a week.
“The CNMI DOL Tinian Office is looking into the matter,” Labor Secretary Edith DeLeon Guerrero said.
DeLeon Guerrero added that they are taking a “proactive approach” instead of a reactive one when it comes to enforcement of labor laws.
“It is my policy that active labor enforcement matters be pursued with consistency and diligence,” DeLeon Guerrero said.
“This is the work and professional standards that the CNMI DOL is expected of and must do,” she added.
Tinian Dynasty is one of the biggest private employers on Tinian.
Aside from the recent pending payment of salaries, a Tinian Dynasty staff said they also experienced delay in receiving paychecks of up to nine payrolls before 2014.
The staff added that they were paid on time only in July 2014 when the U.S. government filed criminal charges against Hong Kong Entertainment (Overseas) Investments, owner of Tinian Dynasty.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network or FinCEN recently assessed a civil penalty of $75 million against HKE for “willful and egregious violations of the Bank Secrecy Act.
