CNMI junior tennis players show wares in Fiji

The CNMI’s junior tennis players returned to action after more than a month of break, competing in the 2014 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships in Fiji last week.

The Commonwealth sent 11 players in Fiji with coach Jeff Race guiding the squad. The CNMI fielded Ken Song, Robbie Schorr, Asia Raulerson, Malika Miyawaki, and Conatsu Kaga in the U12 singles and doubles events, Luther Lizama, Tania Tan, Carol Lee, Julia Ishikawa, and Ami Tsukagoshi joined the U14 contest, and Colin Ramsey competed in the U16 age group.

Lee emerged as the best finish among the CNMI bets after ruling the girls U14 singles, while Ramsey partnered with the Federate State of Micronesia’s Terry Rush in the boys U16 doubles and advanced to the finals. Schorr and Miyawaki made it to the semifinals of the U12 singles, while Lizama earned a Final Four berth in the boys U14 singles.

Meanwhile, in local events, the various basketball leagues on Saipan continued with their respective games.

The 2014 Budweiser Inter-Hotel Basketball League concluded their round-robin regular season at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium with Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan topping the seven-team field. Pacific Islands Club (5-1) dropped to second, followed by World Resort (4-2), Shirley’s Coffee Shop/Century Hotel (4-2), Hyatt Regency Saipan (2-4), Kanoa Resort (1-5), and Mariana Resort (0-6). Shirley’s/Century and Hyatt went on to battle in the first round of the playoffs last Thursday with the former winning, 62-57.

Still at the Ada Gym, the 2014 Emon Lodge No. 179 Brotherhood Basketball League-Docomo Pacific Cup concluded its elimination round with Blue Haus the lone undefeated team in the league with its 6-0 record. Mariana Resort is in close second with its 5-1 slate, followed by Armatech (4-2), Hawaiian Rock (3-3), PIC Chefs (2-4), D&Q (1-5), and I Love Saipan (0-6).

Two other leagues held their regular season matches last week with Blue Haus and TBK Mechanics winning in the DL Corp Invitational Basketball League Season 4 at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium and Ghasias Brothers and Flip Top prevailing in the 2014 DLX Invitational Basketball League at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.

Over at the TSL Sports Complex, elimination round matches in the 2014 Shirley’s Badminton Classic took place over the weekend, while at the Royal Taga Hall of Saipan World Resort, 15 bouts were featured in the Rites of Passage 17: Road to Glory.
