Mariana Islands Basketball Association is looking for a team that will represent the CNMI to the 2018 Mixed U-18 IBF Youth Leaders Basketball Cup that will be held in Indonesia in September.
Lia Rangamar, who attended last week’s International Basketball Foundation Youth Leadership Seminar in Singapore, will be organizing a tournament on July 7 and 8 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium to select the squad that will compete in the inaugural 3×3 tournament at the Discovery Shopping Mall in Bali from Sept. 7 to 10.
The squad that will top the qualifier will be funded by IBF, the foundation arm of FIBA. Teams interested in joining next month’s tournament at the Ada Gym should have two male and two female players, who must be born on or after January 2000. Registration is due on July 5, while a technical meeting among the team captains will be held at 5pm on July 3 at the conference room of the Ada Gym. Entrance fee is only $20 per team.
The winner of the CNMI qualifier will get to play against teams from Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Guam, Fiji, Myanmar, Laos, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Vietnam.
“The qualified participants will also be given the opportunity to participate in a youth leadership program with their other competitors, where they will learn about communication, decision making, and leadership skills; and develop an enhanced ability to handle adversity and leave their comfort zones. This Cup is unique as it aims to develop not only a winning attitude, but sportsmanship, community empowerment, and leadership amongst our youth,” Rangamar said in an official statement sent to Saipan Tribune yesterday.
“We, the Mariana Islands Basketball Federation and IBF, are presenting this opportunity to you and your teams as we feel that your athletes may have the qualities not only found in highly competitive players, but in effective and inspiring leaders for the next generation of leaders in 3×3 basketball,” she added.
