CNMI International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 26, 27

Trash in our oceans, called marine debris, is one of the greatest threats to our planet’s oceans and marine life. The International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer effort to help protect oceans and waterways. Last year in CNMI we picked up a total of 10,488 lbs of trash! A total of 748 volunteers collected 5,660 lbs of trash on Saipan, 263 volunteers collected 1,002 lbs of trash on Tinian, and 634 volunteers collected 3,826 lbs of trash on Rota.

It is not too late to sign up for 29th Annual International Coastal Cleanup! Get your friends, family, coworkers, club members, and anyone else to take an hour or two out of their Friday or Saturday and pick up trash. Join in CNMI’s and the world’s fight to keep our seas trash-free.

Trash not only becomes an eyesore on the beaches that residents and tourist enjoy, but it can also cause health issues from water pollution and dangers from stepping on trash (e.g. glass). Our wildlife is also in danger from the debris we find along our coast. They get entangled, ingest it, and in some cases it is the cause of their mortality.

Join this global and local effort! Put your community first and sign up for the International Coastal Cleanup on your island. Call your local coordinator and see what beaches are available for cleanup.

Please join us for the International Coastal Cleanup (also part of Let’s Move Marianas) on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. To accommodate community members who are unable to attend the Islandwide Cleanup on Friday, we will continue the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, from 8:30am to 10:30am. This is an excellent opportunity for the whole community to come together and enrich the beauty of our islands.

To sign up, contact the CNMI International Coastal Cleanup event organizer, Avra Heller, at 664-8500 or via email at avrahellerdeq@gmail.com. On Rota contact Bill Pendergrass at william.pendergrass@crm.gov.mp or 532-0466.

You can also sign up online! Use the form found at this link: http://bit.ly/1uxFEfj.
