The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. yesterday said two additional individuals have been confirmed positive for COVID-19. This brings the CNMI’s total coronavirus cases to 118 cases since March 28, 2020.

The two individuals were identified by travel screening and confirmed diagnosis through fifth day testing. As per protocol, the two individuals have been safely in quarantine and were moved to the designated isolation area at the Kanoa Resort Alternative Care Site for close monitoring.

The CHCC has already initiated contact tracing for the most immediate contacts of the new confirmed cases, including passengers on the same flight.

Out of the 118 total confirmed cases in the Northern Marianas, 92 are from incoming passengers (49 from the U.S. mainland, 32 from a U.S. territory, and 11 from foreign countries). Twenty-six cases were from community transmission—10 from contact tracing and 16 from community testing conducted by CHCC, including two deaths and four individuals currently on isolation.

The CNMI has now gone 126 days without any community transmission. Its last local case was the 51st person confirmed positive for COVID-19 in early August.

121st death in Guam

The Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 121st COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Memorial Hospital yesterday, Dec. 22, 2020 at approximately 11:16am. The patient was a 66-year-old male with underlying conditions. He was admitted to GMH last Dec. 3 and was a known positive case.

“With each passing, we are reminded that nothing gold can stay. While his parting leaves an island in grief, his memory will live in the hearts of those who knew him. [First gentleman] Jeff [Cool], Lt. Gov. Josh [Tenorio], and I express our deepest condolences and sympathies to his family and friends,” said Guam Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero.

Guam also reported 27 new cases of COVID-19 out of 747 tests performed last Monday, Dec. 21. Five cases were identified through contact tracing. One case reported recent travel history and were identified in quarantine.

To date, there have been a total of 7,238 officially reported cases of COVID-19 with 121 deaths, 449 cases in active isolation and 6,668 not in active isolation. (Saipan Tribune)
