CNMI Handball Federation president Joann Aquino announced that the International Handball Federation has included the CNMI in its Development Aid Program.
Aquino, who is the Saipan Mayor’s Office’s home-stay program coordinator, said the program will donate $5,700 per annum to purchase sports material and $10,000 as administrative costs start up.

The CNMI Handball Federation will implement the IHF’s Handball at School programs throughout the public and private schools in the CNMI as an initiative called “Fun, Passion and Health.” Handball could be played outdoors, indoors, and on the beach.

Aquino said the program will target two course levels. Level 1 will be for physical education teachers to teach handball to children between the ages of 5 to 11 years and Level 2 will focus on age group 12 to 17 years.

On Sept. 13, 2013, Aquino along with Danny Aquino, vice president of the CNMI Handball Federation, received a special invitation from the president of the Guam National Olympic Committee, Ricardo Blas, to attend the IHG Oceania Region Meeting from Sept. 27 to Sep. 29 to establish a local body for the sport of Handball. Representatives from the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Papau New Guinea, American Samoa, Guam, and the CNMI were present to meet with representative Hristo Boskoski Taki.

Another official invitation on Oct. 10, 2013, was given to Aquino from the IHF to attend the 34th Ordinary Congress of the IHG, which organizes every two years and was held at Ritz Carlton Hotel Doha in Qatar from Oct. 25 to Oct. 28.

The Handball in School programs was initiated by IHF president Dr. Hasan Moustafa in 2010 and the first international sports federation to implement this kind of project. To date, a total of 35 courses have been conducted on all five continents with more than 3,000 participants.

IHF is comprised of 190 member federations as of 2013. Countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and Pan America make up the federation. (Jayson Camacho)
