Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has extended his sympathy to Japan in the wake of a devastating earthquake, as aftershocks continue and quake relief floods in.

The governor sent a letter of sympathy to Shinzo Abe, prime minister of Japan, and the families of the victims for the loss and injury to loved ones due to the devastating Kyushu Island and Kumamoto Prefecture earthquakes.

On behalf of the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, I express my deepest condolences to you and the families of the victims of the devastating Kyushu Island and Kumamoto Prefecture earthquakes for the loss and injury to loved ones,” Torres wrote.

“The people of the CNMI hold the people of Japan with the highest regard because of our strong historic friendship and family ties. The people of Japan came to our aid during the aftermath of Typhoon Soudelor and for that, we are forever grateful…know that the people of the CNMI stand ready to assist in any way we can. We are with you during this time of pain and hardship.

The two powerful earthquakes hit the south-western island of Kyushu. An earthquake on Saturday struck at magnitude 7.3, striking in the wake of magnitude-6.4 quake last Thursday, a CNN report said yesterday.

At least 100,000 people are still thought to be living in emergency accommodation, some living in their cars enduring cold temperatures, a CNN report said, and at least 44 people were killed and more than 1,000 people were injured, according to authorities.
