The 2nd Annual CNMI Disability Sports Festival will begin on March 30 on Tinian.

To change the format of last year’s event, the sports fest will be held on Tinian, Rota, and Saipan, instead of just on Saipan. Organizers are looking to increase participation in the event by holding the festival on each island.

The Rota Disability Sports Festival will be held on April 6, while and Saipan will have its turn on April 13. There are five sports for this year’s event.

One of them is adaptive softball with the sport’s rules and play modified to accommodate the needs of players with disabilities. Then there’s boccia, a game of strategy and accuracy played on a flat surface for people with limited motor skills or those using wheelchairs. Cornhole will also be played and it is a lawn game where players throw beanbags at a raised platform to score points. Also on the list is dodgeball, a game in which players try to avoid being eliminated by dodging balls tossed by the other team. Completing the event is kickball, a game that resembles softball and is played with an inflated ball that is kicked rather than hit with a bat.

The Disability Sports Festival Committee is inviting all interested and eligible athletes to join these exciting events.

For more information about the 2nd Annual CNMI Disability Sports Festival or to register to participate, please contact the following representatives: Tinian’s Joseph Hocog at the Tinian Mayor’s Office (433-1800), Rota’s Aubrey Hocog at the Rota Mayor’s Office (532-9451), and Saipan NMPASI at 235-7273.
