Cleanup in Garapan tomorrow
The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality’s Cleanup Brigade would be teaming up with Paseo De Marianas Promoters in an attempt to clean up the Garapan tourist district and drainages this Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 8am. Volunteers are asked to meet on the Paseo de Marianas in front of the Kinpachi Restaurant to pick up supplies and to be given directions.
The cleanup is being held in preparation for a multi-agency cleanup of Garapan storm drains to address the recent flooding events associated with unseasonal rains in the region. The drainage cleanup is being led by the Department of Public Works, Commonwealth Utilities Corp., BECQ, Saipan Mayor’s Office, and National Parks Service. Preparation work will begin Monday, March 17, and is expected to last for approximately three weeks. Traffic will be closed temporarily for work crews starting with the road next to the drainage canal adjacent to Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan. Crews will then move northward toward American Memorial Park.
Area residents and visitors are asked to avoid streets with heavy equipment and work crews for their safety.
If you would like to volunteer your time to clean and beautify our island, meet the BECQ or PDM representatives on Saturday at Paseo De Marianas grounds at 8am. Volunteers will split into groups and clean until 10am and break for drinks and then continue, if needed.
This month, outstanding brigade volunteers who participated in at least 10 monthly cleanups will receive a brigade cap and those who participated in at least three cleanups will receive a brigade t-shirt.
The BECQ is looking forward to a repeat success on Saturday, so join BECQ’s Cleanup Brigade and PDM promoters to “Pick It Up!” Let us work together for the health of our coral reefs and cleanliness of our beaches for everyone to enjoy.
