Cleanup brigade set for Aug. 1 at Tank Beach

Due to recent typhoons and rescheduling of Liberation Day celebrations, the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality Cleanup Brigade has deviated from its regular schedule with no announcement sent out last month as a result of the intermittent connectivity that the CNMI has been experiencing. But we will be at it again and picking up trash at Tank Beach on Saturday, Aug, 1, 2015, at 8 am.

If you would like to volunteer, meet the BECQ representatives on Saturday at the Tank Beach parking lot at 8am. Volunteers will split into groups and clean until 10am and break for drinks and then continue, if needed.

This month, outstanding brigade volunteers who participated in at least 10 monthly cleanups will receive a brigade cap and those who participated in at least three cleanups will receive a brigade t-shirt.

June’s Obyan Beach Cleanup was successful with 18 volunteers participating. Thanks to Saipan Southern High School YEA Club, Marianas High School, Micronesian Islands Nature Alliance, Commonwealth Utilities Corp., and other volunteers, about 120 lbs of marine debris was removed from the beach and properly disposed of.

The BECQ is looking forward to repeat a success on Saturday, so join BECQ’s Monthly cleanup brigade and “Pick It Up!” Let us work together for the health of our coral reefs and cleanliness of our beaches for everyone to enjoy.

For more information about volunteering, contact the BECQ office at 664-8500/1.
