The Christmas parade kicked off a quarter to 6pm with schools and floats heading down toward Garapan’s tourist district.
Among the parade participants were Koblerville Elementary School, Kagman Elementary School, Northern Marianas International School, Tanapag Junior High, San Antonio Junior High, Chacha Oceanview Junior High, Saipan Southern High School, Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Miss Marianas Teen Gianna Camacho, and the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
Parade participants whistled and shouted out “Merry Christmas” to spectators.
After the parade, the floats were then parked at Coral Tree Avenue for picture taking.
Students taking part in the costume competition went on stage to show off their outfits, many of which used recycled materials and home products.
Pacific Development Inc. director Gordon Marciano said the costumes were very creative.
“We have really talented students and very creative ones too. I myself would have never thought of these ideas,” Marciano said.
Students showcased Christmas costumes that showed a snowman, Santa Claus, candy canes, decorated ornaments, and many more.
Healthy walking
About 35 walkers joined the 5-kilometer walk this year that started as early as 4:30pm. Those who registered got a free shirt and water. Participants walked from Paseo de Marianas toward Beach Road across Saipan Computer Services and back to Garapan Fishing Base to join the parade.
