The Korean Association of Saipan and the Chinese Association of Saipan will be holding a joint celebration of the Lunar New Year for two Saturdays, Feb. 13 and 20. Their Lunar New Year starts today.
The Korean New Year or Seollal, a three-day family holiday, and Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving, are two major festivals celebrated by South Koreans.
Performances and other activities celebrating the Chinese and Korean culture will be shown with organizers and officials of Paseo de Marianas Promoters Inc. inviting the community to join them for two Saturdays.
CAS president and Marianas Visitors Authority director Jerry Tan said they are hoping that this year’s festivities won’t be the first and the last time they do it, as it would surely increase foot traffic and tourist activity at PDM.
“We want to use this activity to attract people to come to Paseo especially at night time. To bring in more traffic at PDM since this is the heart of Garapan,” said Tan. We want to have various activities and events for the community and tourists to enjoy.”
He added that even shop owners at PDM also made upgrades and other improvements. “The owners are upgrading their structures and reinvesting. I Love Saipan is the latest addition here at PDM.”
“There is increased confidence of businesses here and new investors coming in. PDM Inc. is working hard with MVA being a great partner. We are confident that PDM is on the rise,” added Tan.
The Christmas in the Marianas Festival was held annually also at PDM along with the Mochitsuki Festival Festival.
The traditional lion dance starts today at 8am at the TSL Plaza in Garapan and the dancers will visit more than 30 business establishments and they would end their performance at the Saipan World Resort at 9pm.
