CNMI Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexandro Castro and a male crewmember were safely rescued after their boat got flooded due to rough water and subsequently sunk west of Tinian and Goat Island on Saturday night.

The Department of Public Safety’s Zodiac 3 rescue boat transported Castro and his crewmember to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment, Saipan Tribune learned yesterday.

DPS acting spokesman Jason Tarkong said he has no information as to how many hours the two were stranded and that more details about the incident will be released to the media today, Wednesday.

Tarkong said that on Saturday at 8:29pm, DPS Boating Safety officers responded to a reported boat in distress about 19 miles west of Tinian and Goat Island.

Tarkong said Boating Safety officers did a grid search with the help of a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, which spotted the boat drifting about a mile east of last location reported.

He said the officers aboard the Zodiac 3 boat safely rescued the two passengers.

“The U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was hovering over the scene,” Tarkong said.

He said it turned out that due to rough water, the boat was flooded and subsequently sunk.

It’s not clear whether Castro was the captain and the owner of the boat.
