Chamber to play vital role in development
The Saipan Chamber of Commerce knows its role of being the community’s partner in developing and sustaining the economy of the islands, and at the same time help address the critical issues affecting the CNMI.
That’s why Chamber executive director Maxine Laszlo said that she wants the people to see their group also as a problem solver. “It is not just waiting on something to happen but that we are actively engaged in solving problems that have an impact on the islands, businesses, people, and the community.”
She added that she wants the Chamber to be a force that would help drive the islands’ success, seeing the importance of the Chamber maintaining its close relations with the government. “Not only on the legislative side, but we also wanted to focus on other government partnerships.”
“Making sure that we have and maintain good relationships with agencies like [Commonwealth] Zoning [Board], the [Department of Public Works], and other agencies that affects the busineses. We want to expand on our growth.”
She added that business advancement also means helping small businesses move forward aside from new and corporate businesses. “A sustainable economic development makes sure that the community has a good working relationship with the businesses. We need to identify these industries that are coming to the islands and how they impact the rest of the community.”
“We see the power of the private sector in solving problems and that is what we are trying to harness here. How, instead of waiting for our government partners, can we start solving problems and do our share.”
Laszlo said focusing on workforce and education would also assist sustainable development. “How to get our students, young people, and people of different ages ready for the workforce and what support that they are going to get to be part of the workforce that could move our island forward.”
The mission and vision submitted by each of the committees would then be used as the Chamber’s guide for the coming years.
